Our History

Awesome Dawgs got its start when Mary Jo Carabello, a long-time theatre arts professional, decided she needed a change. Steve Smith, her husband, asked her one morning, “If you could get up every day and feel really excited and happy about going to work, what would that look like?” She told him it would have to have something to do with dogs. That set the wheels in motion. Together they found a school through which Mary Jo could get her education and certification in dog training. As soon as she had completed her internship she was hired by the Pottstown, PA Petsmart, where she received further dog training education and a year of experience.

By this time, Mary Jo and Steve knew they wanted to establish their own dog training business, so Steve began pursuing his education while both were teaching classes at the Leesport Pet Resort one night a week. At the end of that first year, they were invited to bring their program to Godfrey’s – Welcome to Dogdom in Mohnton, PA. That is where their business really began to take off. They started with puppy and beginner classes one night a week. Now, they also offer intermediate and advanced training, as well as tricks training and Canine Good Citizen preparation. Currently, half of their business is private training. Godfrey’s is also where Mary Jo became reacquainted with her long-time friend, Melissa Eggert. An enthusiastic dog-lover and animal advocate, Melissa shared her desire to become a dog trainer. One thing led to another, and before long, Melissa earned her certification and began teaching classes with Awesome Dawgs.

Eventually, Awesome Dawgs became a limited liability company (LLC) and a resource for both of Berks County’s animal welfare organizations - the Humane Society and the Animal Rescue League. These groups refer their adopters to Awesome Dawgs who, in turn, strive to keep the dogs in their homes by teaching their human parents how to train them effectively. Lack of socialization and proper training are the number one reason for dogs being given up to shelters. Awesome Dawgs would like to help change that statistic.

Mary Jo and Steve have had both of their dogs, Boykin spaniels named Claudia and Dooley, certified as Canine Good Citizens and therapy dogs. Together with other therapy dog teams they visit local nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehab centers and schools.

Mary Jo has pursued rally obedience and agility in order to sharpen her skills as a handler and to give Claudia and Dooley an outlet for their high energy and drive. She incorporates the knowledge of these fields in her teaching.

As Awesome Dawgs continues their adventure in helping people to understand and live in harmony with their canine companions, we hope you will join us on our journey with your dog.
